Description

For some years in the 1960s, the ‘bootstrap theory of strong interactions’ was dominant.  Those who favoured the ‘naïve quark model’ were dismissed.  Fortunately, some key experiments advanced robustly, and the evidence for quarks became overwhelming (albeit with extraordinary properties:  fractional charge, colour, flavour, their existence restricted by asymptotic freedom).  Those who lived through these turbulent times, including naïve grad students such as myself, were at risk of having their careers derailed.  A sub-title for this talk could be ‘Advice for young scientists – and some bosses!’.
