First Results From The Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment

Description

The Fermilab muon g-2 experiment recently published the measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a_μ, with a precision of 0.46 ppm. The new value is in good agreement with the previous measurement of aμ by the Brookhaven g-2 experiment, and the average of the two results is in tension with the currently accepted Standard Model prediction at the 4.2 σ level. In the experiment, a beam of polarized muons orbits inside a highly uniform magnetic storage ring with a vertical magnetic field. Both the anomalous precession frequency of the stored muons, and the average magnetic field experienced by the muons, must be measured with equally high precision in order to determine a_μ. The recent result represents data from the first running period (run-1) of the Fermilab experiment, recorded in 2018. This seminar will cover the run-1 measurement, including details of both the muon precession and magnetic field analyses, as well as prospects for future improvements.
