Description
Abstract:
This seminar links LBNL’s accelerator heritage to CERN’s next strategic step. We will explore some of the biggest questions in science and the price of asking them.
Europe is approaching completion of the 2026 European Strategy for Particle Physics Update (ESPPU), a coordinated process involving laboratories, universities, and national agencies. The talk will outline the European Strategy, the motivations for its update, and the emerging direction of the process, with particular focus on accelerator options and their scientific drivers. Especially welcome are the perspectives of early-career researchers and students, who will inherit the consequences of today’s decisions.

About Speaker:
Haroon Rafique has worked on several European proton synchrotrons, including a PhD on LHC Collimation, a post-doc on FCC-hh machine detector interface, and a fellowship on the LHC Injectors Upgrade. He is currently a Senior Accelerator Physicist at the UK’s neutron and muon facility, ISIS—named after the Egyptian goddess of rebirth—at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Haroon is a plenary member of the European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA), serves on STFCs Particle Physics Advisory Panel (PPAP), and contributes to a range of national and international funding and oversight committees.
