During the 9 years of operation (2009 – 2018) of the original LHCb experiment, the RICH team at CERN had to face many unpredictable (and possibly some predictable but not predicted) challenges. An overview of the RICH system of the LHCb experiment, with emphasis on the operation of the detectors, will be presented. Lessons learned during this period should help design better detectors in the future. Although the presentation focuses on the problems encountered, this is a celebration of an extremely successful particle identification detector.
