Description

This is the third community drafting day for the 2026 European Strategy for Particle Physics Update (ESPPU). This will discuss further updates to the UK's national input following the deadline for community submissions on 31st March 2025. This meeting will discuss in detail:

  • Updated information from project submissions.
  • Prioritisation of alternative options (q3c and q3e) under various scenarios that might deem FCC unfeasible.
  • Possible prioritisation of non-collider options.

Additional topics will likely be brought up for discussion following comments raised on the first draft of the UK's national input (available here: https://indico.stfc.ac.uk/event/1434/ ).

To support the discussion and contribute to the development of the UK's input to the ESPPU, the community was invited to complete a survey. The results, reflecting responses from 185 participants, are provided in the attachment below.

Please note the discussions will run from 11am-5pm with arrival coffee available from 10.30am.

Please bring Photo ID with on the day

As with previous meetings, a google doc is available for the community to provide input/comments ahead of time: https://docs.google.com/document/d/15SNHADkaVvm2Ad6lFY9H8Cig_kngbC1Hl7sVVD9ew_M/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.fb3d6ytio7r8

In this session, we aim to have 3 short "digests" of the various project submissions that will be available after the 31st March in the following 3 areas:
        - Collider physics
        - Non-collider physics
        - Accelerator projects
For the two physics talks, the aim is not to try and perform the comparisons that will be performed by the Physics Preparatory Group ahead of the open symposium in Venice, but instead to highlight the new information made available that the community should consider in the prioritisation and scenario planning discussions scheduled throughout the drafting day. For the accelerator talk, we hope this will summarise any updated costings, proposed timescales and environmental impact studies as well as specific proposals for beam parameters (energy/luminosity) at particular sites.

        Updated discussions on 3c 35m

Discuss specific answers to 3 of the 4 scenarios listed:

        1. If Japan proceeds with the ILC in a timely way?
          (2. If China proceeds with the CEPC on the announced timescale?)
        2. If the US proceeds with a muon collider?
        3. If there are major new (unexpected) results from the HL-LHC or other HEP experiments?

        (2) will be discussed as part of the 3e discussions

      • 12:45
Initial discussion on scenarios for consideration in 3e 15m

The following scenarios will be considered separately

        1. [Cost/technical/environmentally unfeasibility]- FCC is unaffordable or unfeasible on either cost or environmental grounds.
        2. [International developments] - CEPC is realised.
        3. [Timing]- Timescales for FCC are pushed back.
