Description

The CMS experiment employs a scouting program to collect reduced data from trigger-only reconstruction at a high event rate, expanding its reach to lower-energy physics. This program has already achieved significant milestones, including the first observation of a rare meson decay and setting new limits on dark matter searches during Run 2. For Run 3, key improvements have been introduced, allowing data collection at an impressive rate of 30 kHz. New features now include the incorporation of electrons and photons into the scouting process and the ability to collect combinations of physics objects, such as photons, electrons, muons, and jets, regardless of the primary trigger. These advancements support detailed multi-object analysis. This presentation will offer a brief historical overview, summarise key physics results from Run 2, and provide an in-depth look at the implementation and technical enhancements in Run 3 that have driven these scouting advancements.
