QUantum Enhanced Superfluid Technologies for Dark Matter and Cosmology (QUEST-DMC)

Description

The QUEST-DMC experiment aims to search for eV-keV scale interactions with sub-GeV dark matter candidates. To do this, superconducting nanoelectromechanical resonators are submerged in superfluid Helium-3 bolometers, cooled to ~130 µK, and read out with low-noise quantum sensors. The collaboration also uses the two superfluid phases of Helium-3 to shed light on phase transitions in the early universe. This talk will detail the design of the experiment, commissioning and recent data, with an emphasis on future direct dark matter detection sensitivities.

Rob studied Physics at the University of Sheffield from 2014-17. Obtained a PGCE in secondary education, with a specialisation in physics from 2017-2018 at Sheffield Hallam University. An MSc in Particle Physics from the University of Sheffield in 2020. Started his PhD at Royal Holloway University in 2021 under the supervision of Prof. Jocelyn Monroe, with an Academic visitorship at the University of Oxford since 2023. Defended his PhD in 2025, with the title 'Searching for Sub-GeV Dark Matter Using a Superfluid Helium-3 Calorimeter in QUEST-DMC'. Started working at RAL in October 2025 under Dr Ashlea Kemp, mostly on the Darkside-20k direct dark matter detection experiment, alongside still working on QUEST-DMC.
