DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Ben King (University of Plymouth)\n\nThe cross-secti
on of fundamental particle physics processes can be modified if they take
place in a coherent electromagnetic background. Such backgrounds can be fo
und around strongly magnetised neutron stars\, along directions of symmetr
y in oriented crystals\, in conducting cavities and\, as this talk will fo
cus on\, laser pulses. The main concepts will be introduced\, such as i) h
ow the charge-field coupling can become non-perturbative in intense electr
omagnetic backgrounds\; ii) how lasers can modify kinematics to open react
ion channels\; iii) why a 'strongly-coupled' phase of QED has been hypothe
sised. An overview of science goals and the differing approaches to physic
s at various facilities will be given and a conclusion drawn about the nex
t steps the laser-particle community should take for progress to be mainta
 ined.\n\nhttps://indico.stfc.ac.uk/event/1909/
