The Cockcroft Institute invites you to join us at Daresbury Laboratory on Wednesday 29th October to explore the amazing particle accelerator science and engineering we do here in the North West. The event will bring together students across all the institute partner universities (Manchester, Lancaster, Liverpool, Strathclyde) to showcase our facilities, highlight potential career opportunities (PhDs, graduate schemes, summer placements) and give you a chance to meet fellow students, researchers, academics and staff scientists working in the field.
The event includes transport, lunch, talks, discussions and tours, with the doors open for a rare opportunity to get inside and up close to the new upgraded CLARA accelerator (the largest linear accelerator in the UK at almost 100 m long). This machine delivers high energy electron beams in combination with a high-power 100 terawatt laser for world-leading research and development in areas such as compact plasma and terahertz accelerators, X-ray radiation sources, advanced beam diagnostics and cancer treatment. You will get to visit the facilities and meet the people developing, testing and building cryogenic superconducting accelerators for international projects such as the DUNE neutrino experiments in the USA and the European neutron source in Sweden, and see surface science laboratories investigating processes such as photoemission, electron capture and vacuum self-pumping.
