The SLD vertex detector operated from 1992 till 1998. John Jaros, who has reviewed many subsequent tracking detectors, recently described it as 'the best vertex detector I have ever seen'. This talk will recall the roller-coaster development of the world's first pixel-based vertex detector, and important lessons that might easily be forgotten.
