Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) has had a rich history of scientific contribution to particle physics. An outstanding example of this is the complex configuration of superconducting filaments, Rutherford Cable. This novel design revolutionised superconducting magnets, allowing for their first application within high energy physics and beyond.
This presentation will explore the phenomenon of superconductivity and the origin of Rutherford Cable. Starting with its first prototype manufactured in 1967, we trace its development across its almost 60 years of history, to the modern use within the dipoles currently being manufactured for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC).
